IB Awards Ceremony

On Wednesday 12 February 2020, Mr Brad Fry, Principal, Dr Jessica Davies, Acting Chair of the Board and I attended the International Baccalaureate Diploma Awards Ceremony. This was held at Deakin Edge, Federation Square and was hosted by Lauriston Girls’ School, one of the 19 IB schools in Victoria and Tasmania.

This is an annual event which honours IB students who attain a score of 40 and above, and acknowledges the challenging and highly rewarding aspects of the 2 year Diploma Programme.  Tintern Grammar students who received a Certificate of Distinction were Ron Chen, Sophie Glasson, Molly Fleming, Rose Russell, Nicolani Susanto (in absentia) and Eddie Yu.

The evening was a delightful mix of musical items, presentations to the IB graduates and speeches. In his message of congratulations to the graduates, Mr Steven Wishart, IB Australasia/Asia Pacific Manager, noted that Australian results were the best across the Asia/Pacific region and, that within Australia, the Victorian/Tasmanian results were the best. The guest speaker, Lizzie O’Shea, was in the IB class of 2000. She is a social justice lawyer, is on the board of Digital Rights Watch, and is the author of ‘Future Histories’.  Her inspirational speech encouraged the IB graduates to see that taking a chance is far better than never trying something, that failing can sometimes be beneficial, and that passion for what one does is important.  Lizzie drew on her experience of both success and failure to finish with the observation that you are never too little to make a difference, and you are never too great to learn. The response on behalf of the IB Diploma graduates by a Lauriston representative of the class of 2019, noted the significant contribution made by parents and teachers to the success of the graduates.

Tintern Grammar has been running the IB Diploma Programme for 28 years, with great success. It is an important part of our culture as well as a highly desirable academic pathway in Years 11 and 12. We regularly have our past IB students return to the school to speak at information nights and assemblies where they remark upon the many benefits of the programme which include excellent preparation for university study and life. An IB Information Evening will be held on Monday 25th May 2020.
