Easter Celebrations in the ELC

Celebrating cultural diversity is an essential foundation for life. Within the ELC, we have already celebrated Lunar New Year and now, at this time of the year, Easter.  Celebrating Easter is one of many valued opportunities that strengthens the links between ELC and Junior School and further builds on the sense of whole School community.

Children belong first to a family, a cultural group, a neighbourhood and a wider community. Belonging acknowledges children’s interdependence with others and the basis of relationships in defining identities. In early childhood and throughout life, relationships are crucial to a sense of belonging. Belonging is central to being and becoming in that it shares who children are and who they can become’ (Belonging, Being & Becoming: The Early Years Framework for Australia, 2009, p.7).

We started our Easter celebrations with a visit from Rev. Alison. She read us a story about Shrove Tuesday also known as Pancake Tuesday and explained the importance and history of this special day. Rev. Alison showed the children a video where children shared their traditions and practices for Shove Tuesday. In turn, the ELC children revealed what their favourite toppings were to have with pancakes.

Over the last two weeks, the children have explored the celebration of Easter in a range of play-based ways. Using art-based media, we have decorated our Easter hats, bonnets, ears and baskets and experimented with a range of techniques from acrylic painting to print screening. In our music lessons with Mrs Bhatt, the children have built on their sense of rhythm, practicing our songs for the Easter Concert. Our classrooms have featured small world play environment set up with Easter bunnies, eggs and other Easter themed materials and resources.

Easter is an opportunity for children, families, teachers and educators to actively learn about each other, to share in the rich diversity of the celebrations in our community and support our connection with the rest of the School community.
