Green Team supports the FareShare FootSteps Challenge in 2021

From 3 -17 October this year, five students; Annabelle Guscott, Jasmine Boss, Zoe McKinlay, Meleah Byth and myself, and two teachers; Ms. Anne Bortolussi and Mrs. Megan Scholz, participated in the FareShare FootSteps Challenge. Over the two weeks, we walked 799km and raised $2828 . The money raised will go towards FareShare, who, for over 20 years “has been rescuing quality food and cooking it into nutritious meals for people doing it tough”. The Tintern Grammar Team’s contribution will help produce over 3,500 meals for people in need.

The FareShare FootSteps Challenge was designed to represent how each of the FareShare chefs walk approximately 150km every week “as they keep pace with [the] demand for free, nutritious meals”. As of October 18, the 709 participants in this challenge have walked over 54,000kms and raised over $291,000 – helping to produce over 388,000 meals which will be delivered to people struggling to access nutritious food.

FareShare has a four-step process; rescue, cook, grow, feed. They rescue quality food from landfill, gather donations, and collect surplus food from supermarkets, which they cook into over 12,000 nutritious meals a day. These meals are packed with protein and fresh vegetables, such as zucchini, carrot, eggplant, sweet potato, and pumpkin, that they grow in their kitchen gardens. The meals are then distributed to feed those in need. In Victoria, FareShare meals are distributed by more than 400 charities, including homeless shelters, women’s refugees and RSLs.
