From the Principal

This week we have a special lead introduction from Sue Healey, Director of Information & Technology Services and Head of ICT Curriculum…

Over the last 18 months the concept of pivoting has become an often-used term in many aspects of our lives. For Tintern, this meant that in March 2020, after 143 years of on-site learning, Tintern shifted within 48 hours to an all-digital remote learning ecosystem. For many in our community, this shift appeared almost seamless.

Real classrooms were swapped for online Teams classrooms. On-site student parent conferences were also swapped for online Teams meetings. Parents could now join and chat with their child’s teacher from home or work. No more rushing to get to school for appointment deadlines. Teams meetings allowed staff to participate in timely PD sessions at the end of the school day and meet with their colleagues for staff and planning sessions. OneDrive, our cloud-based storage space meant staff and student work files were available anywhere, anytime on any device. Schoolbox, our school portal, provided a platform for lessons to be delivered, for students to submit work, for teachers to mark student work and for parents to have online visibility of class work, due work and student results…and EdSmart, our permissions/excursions platform provided timely digital communications when identifying families who required onsite supervision during each of the six Victorian lockdowns.

While it may have appeared that these services appeared overnight, the reality of our March 2020 shift to online learning came about after many years of planning and a staged implementation of our move to the cloud.

Looking back, the school was already well underway on its digital journey having trialled our first portal in the early 2000s followed by a second product trial in 2010. This was a time when the federal government provided grants to support the purchase of 1:1 devices in schools. By 2012 Tintern had established more than 17 computer labs across two campuses while iPads were introduced into the primary and middle schools for all students. As Director of Information and Technology Services, in 2012 I was offered an opportunity to travel to the US to visit schools in San Francisco and New York and see first hand how lighthouse schools were teaching and learning with technology. A subsequent visit to Silicon Valley included meetings with educational consultants at the offices of Google, Microsoft and Apple. While the era of virtual reality was still on the horizon (expected within 5 to 7 years) the most pressing need in schools once students had 1:1 devices was a shift to a cloud based future for teaching and learning.

In the years since, the school’s executive and board have continuously supported our vision of an integrated cloud based, device agnostic future. IT budgets year-on-year have supported continuous updates to core infrastructure to ensure as near as possible 99% uptime of school services to all community members.

The final steps in our Microsoft Office 365 migration occurred in early 2020 just prior to the greatest educational shift in our lifetime. As a result, the school was well placed in March 2020 to make an almost seamless pivot. It is a testament to the team I work closely with everyday. I am truly grateful for their commitment to excellence, their ability to implement new technologies with teachers and students at the core of all decision making and the endless hours spent ensuring that teaching has continued with minimum technology disruptions.

Tintern Grammar Alumni’s Year 12 Care packages

The TGA (Tintern Grammar Alumni) recently provided care packages to support the year 12 students in preparation for their final exams after what has been an extremely challenging couple of years.

The TGA committee are passionate about bringing current students, alumni and the wider school community together in all that we do. As a way of supporting the wider school community as well as the Year 12s, we invited businesses in the Tintern Grammar community to include items in these care packages. We were blown away by the generosity of the individuals and businesses who enthusiastically donated various products to help the students de-stress, smile and find the motivation for their final exams.

The bags contained a range of goodies including: a stress ball, cookie, bamboo cutlery, a colouring book, Warrior Princess by alumna Belinda Collins (YG 1991), clay resin magnet/bookmark, highlighters, fun socks, hand sanitiser, hand cream, a custom reusable face mask, lollies/chocolate and many more items to support our Year 12 students.

The custom reusable face masks in the care packages included a design from one of the Year 12 Visual Arts students- a special memento for the Year 12 group.

We sincerely thank the many alumni and current families who donated towards these packages. We’d particularly like to note the businesses in our school community who generously supported the TGA’s project, we greatly appreciate your generosity:

Friends of Equestrian

Due to a significant number of parents finishing up this year, the Friends Of Equestrian Committee is looking for new volunteers to continue the 21 year legacy and join the committee.

If you are interested in joining the FOE committee please contact Ash Viney  or Di Lacey in Community Relations.

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved and make a significant contribution to Equestrian activities at Tintern Grammar.

Presentation Ball Committee

Are you interested in being involved in the Presentation Ball Committee? An opportunity has opened up to join the Committee and take this traditional pastime into a new era.

Offered each year to our Year 11 students, it is a wonderful opportunity for them to receive modern dance instruction whilst having fun and experiencing a formal presentation to family and friends.

Interested in taking on the role of Parent Representative?

Wanting to continue as Parent Rep for your 2021 Class or Year Level?

Parent Representative are a liaison between parents/guardians and the school. Informing parents about activities planned either by Tintern, our community groups or within the class or year level, such as fundraisers or events.

Parent Reps also organise class or year level functions to provide parents with the opportunity of meeting and socialising in a relaxed atmosphere. It would be a great opportunity for class groups to connect, while supporting our local community cafes and restaurants still recovering from the lockdowns.

We greatly appreciate the time and commitment given by our Parent Reps. This role is suitable for Parents or Guardians who are in the workforce or who undertake home responsibilities.

A special thank you to our wonderful team of Parent Representatives from 2021. Though the year was again not what we expected, with the cancellation of many events, we greatly appreciated their efforts in unusual times.

Thank you to all those who have already signed on as Parent Reps for 2022. We are very grateful for your support. The role can be shared between many people, so please get in touch with you are interested or would like to volunteer, by email communityrelations@tintern.vic.edu.au or by phone 03 9845 7877.

Music Matters

The hills are alive ….. with the sound of music!

We have loved seeing some of our young musicians returning to their music lessons ‘live’ this week. Our Tintern music teachers are so very excited that all of our music students will be returning to school next week. The hills and dales around East Ringwood (or around Tintern, at least) will be resonating with the sounds of singing and instruments playing. All of this will take place in COVID-safe environments, and it will be delightful to hear and see all of our musicians involved in lessons, which will herald the beginnings of a return to ensemble rehearsals. Musical friendships will be renewed and the joy of communal music-making will start to be experienced in our corridors once more.

Concerto Competition in 2022

The Concerto Festival is an event for experienced musicians currently attending Tintern Grammar. The Festival provides a valuable performance experience for all students who enter. All students are eligible to participate whether they learn at Tintern Grammar or outside the school.

The preliminary event will be held in the CM Wood Centre on Wednesday 9 March 2022.  Students are required to perform one movement only from a concerto, or for singers, a recitative and aria, with piano accompaniment.

An external adjudicator will choose the top three or four performers from the preliminary evening. These students will then be invited to perform their concerto movement, or recitative and aria, accompanied by orchestra (or other appropriate ensemble) at the Final Showcase on Wednesday 15 June.

Please contact Mrs Feenane in the Music Office at music@tintern.vic.edu.au for further information or to request an entry form. Entries close Friday 3 December 2021

ELC News

ELC Big Breakfast

Aligned with the School’s Compass Values of Responsibility and Compassion, the ELC held our annual Big Breakfast from the 18th to the end of October. We invited ELC families to enjoy a delicious breakfast with the people they love, to take a photo, and share it on our School’s ELC Portal page. It is one of the many ways that we connect with our families and the wider community.

Each year, we choose a charity to support with our Big Breakfast. This year, the money raised will go towards Canteen, an organisation that supports young Australians impacted by cancer. We set a target of $500 to be raised and welcome donations towards supporting young people living with cancer, whether it is their own diagnosis, or that of a parent or sibling.

Giving back to the community teaches children empathy. By helping children connect with others in their community who may be facing a myriad of challenges and are less fortunate than themselves is a simple way to value this life lesson. Being a part of a fund-raising campaign for a charity, such as Canteen, can be both inspiring and contagious. When children see others pitching in to help, it inspires them to do the very same. Children feel emboldened to give back when they themselves see their own families donate time and funds to a worthy cause.

Mrs Kristin De Vos, ELC Director, hosted a Big Breakfast for the ELC staff and we used this valuable opportunity to slow down and share in conversation with each other before the hustle and bustle of the day. With hope and time, we believe firmly that we will be able to host next year’s Big Breakfast onsite and connect with each other in person.

Physical Education in the Girls’ Junior School

We are back! It was a wonderful first session back with the prep girls on Monday 11 October.

We skipped, ran, laughed our way to the basketball courts for the first session back of P.E.

The prep girls played their favourite games “noodle tag” and “silly bananas”, with music pumping in the background. There was a huge buzz in their air as the girls enjoyed running around with their friends and enjoying each other’s company.

The first sessions back for all students in P.E is centred around movement, connection and having fun! And reigniting their love of P.E.

We look forward to welcoming back all GJS students and playing their favourite P.E games in the coming week.

Term 4 Music in the Classroom – Prep to Years 2;

What a joy it was to be reunited with the girls this week, as the Prep to Years 2 students returned to onsite Music classes!  After having learned a large repertoire of action songs during remote learning, it was great to be together again in the Music room, with our focus now shifting to ‘The Nutcracker’.

Whilst it has been a challenge this last two years to get to Term 4 and be unable to sing together because of COVID-safe regulations, it is also wonderful as a teacher to come up with new approaches to doing things.

As such, we have reinstated a “Hello” and “Goodbye” song from last year that can ‘sung’ in sign language (this is great for inner hearing), and will be focussing on Tchaikovsky’s ‘The Nutcracker’.  This story, told through music, dance, costumes and sets, tells of how a girl’s imagination (Clara) comes to life on Christmas Eve after she is given a wooden nutcracker by her Godfather.

The aim of our music classes, will be to help the students gain a broader perspective on this great work, so that they can increase their musical understanding as well as consolidate their preparations for the GJS production of ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse-King’.

We will be exploring the music through discussion and movement, drawing out such concepts as Form, Tempo, Pitch, Articulation, Instrumentation and Mood.  Also, listening to students’ personal responses to the excerpts of music that they hear.

Please look out for the girls’ Nutcracker listening booklets at the end of Term 4.  These should provide an excellent insight into their work this term, and their experiences of the music of this ballet.

And we are back!

With great excitement, the Year 2 girls joined together last Thursday in real life!

Although we have all been very grateful to see each other online, we had missed seeing each other in person.

It was exciting and wonderful to be back in our classroom.

We chatted and played and we made slime. We had been waiting since the 5 of August to make slime together and that was 77 days.

It was so much fun and we did lots of experiments.

We worked with a partner, we needed to read the instructions, add the ingredients together and then we got to play. Some of the slime didn’t work properly to start with so we all got together and used our Higher Order Thinking to problem solve. In the end, we worked with our buddy and divided our slime into half and weighed it on the scales to make sure that we both had the same amount. Now we have slime tubs on our desk to play and experiment with when we are at school.

Boys’ Junior School News

Last term began with Bastille Day celebrations around the world on 14 July. In some French classes we made Bonne Fête Nationale cards/flags and in others we shared what we know about Bastille Day and the French Revolution, and we watched humorous and informative clips about these important events in French culture. A Bastille model building group challenge was planned but unfortunately this could not take place due to COVID restrictions.

Father’s Day

All students read a French picture about dads, called “Mon Papa” (My Dad) by Anthony Brown and answered some translation questions. Students were invited to make a Father’s/Special Person’s Day card.

In remote learning in Term 3, Years 1 to 2 focused on revision tasks, such as classroom language, numbers, colours, the alphabet and learning days of the week. Work on the alphabet continued this term- here is a link to a fun song we have been singing to learn the alphabet sounds:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LYy3P2okyw

The boys also very much enjoyed this little bit silly but very fun and effective video to practise vowel sounds. We will be learning months of the year for the next few weeks, with the aid of some fun games, songs and the fabulous Linguascope platform. Students should know the user name and pass word- they are also on the Blog on the French portal page.

Years 3 to 6 have been learning and revising days of the week and weather expressions using a range of raps, songs, online games and activities and clips. We have been practising this rap to assist in memorising weather expressions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhKjTBAGZDU

Many students have been attending online sessions and having fun learning, singing and playing games. I am very proud of the effort so many of the students have made to attend sessions and maintain their French language skills. A huge “bravo” and “bon courage”!

For Term 4, the Year 3 to 6 students have begun a “pizza face” task, where they will bake/make/draw a pizza with a funny face and learn the vocabulary for their favourite toppings. We will be referring to the old classic, “Je suis une pizza!” song (I am a pizza) to help us learn vocabulary. We will also be working on forming sentences regarding our preferences for pizza toppings, and some basic cooking phrases. See the French portal pages for more details.

Merci, et à bientôt,

Madame Mathers

Welcome back to campus Years 3 and 4 boys!

We were delighted to welcome back to School our Year 3 and 4 boys after a very long period of remote learning.

The boys very quickly reconnected with friends and spent the day full of their usual energy and positive spirit.

Middle School News

What a welcome change it has been to see students and staff back on campus enjoying each other’s company once again. We have continued to see disruptions to our teaching and learning by moving in and out of lockdowns for such a long time; however, there is some confidence that we may be moving forward into a time where extended periods of remote are behind us. We certainly have our fingers crossed that this is the case.

As has been communicated in recent days, the return to campus does carry with it other complications such as the current staggered return for our Year 8 and 9 students and being able to pivot from face-to-face for some lessons, and then back to remote learning for others. We have absolute confidence that students will adapt to this staggered model well before becoming full-time on Friday 5 November.

Pegasus Writing Competition

Throughout each year our English department runs a Pegasus Writing Competition open to students across the entire secondary with prizes awarded for Middle School entries and for Senior College entries. There are always many quality entries to this competition and the task for the judges is never an easy one. This year our top two students in the Middle School are:

1st place – Leon Jiao in Year 7

2nd place – Sashenka Fernando in Year 8.

Congratulations to both students. More details on the competition will be coming soon, courtesy of our English department.

Maths Talent Quest

The 2021 Maths Talent Quest ceremony was held online on Thursday 21 October with students who achieved Distinctions or High Distinctions invited to participate. It was wonderful to see a very good representation of Tintern students participating in the competition from Year 3 up to Year 12. A huge congratulations to Elijah Hanna in Year 8 who was awarded a Distinction for his project titled “Can we use maths to predict the winner of the Brownlow Medal?” It is great to see Elijah combining two areas of strength and interest (sports and mathematics) together in an enjoyable and rewarding project. Well done, Elijah.

Congratulations also to Joshua Choong in Year 12 who received a High Distinction for his project titled “YABADABADOO cartesian art” and was also selected as the top Victorian Year 12 entry to compete in the national competition. Our fingers are crossed for Josh who is another fine example of taking opportunities that are provided to him and making the most of them.

Return to campus

It was really pleasing to hear the news over the last weekend around the date of a full return for all students coming forward to Wednesday 3 November. This will mean that for the remainder of this week our staggered return is still in place; however, after our long weekend all students will be returning to full time face-to-face learning. A reminder that Monday 1 November is our mid-term break (no school) and Tuesday 2 November is the Melbourne Cup public holiday (no school).

Senior College News

Senior College News

It was wonderful to welcome Years 10 and 11 students back to campus on Friday 22 October and it actually felt like that they had never left which I believe is a positive sign and indicative of their adaptability. The warm weather certainly helped our adjustment to doors and windows open with the students enjoying the sunshine outside during breaks from classes. We also reminded students about correct mask wearing as this maximises protection for all our health during this current phase of opening up from lockdown. Year 10 students will be back on campus from Thursday 28 October and please note that students are not required at school on Monday 1 and 2 November due to the long weekend for Melbourne Cup Day.

Back on Campus….

Year 11 students are now back on campus full time and note that students undertaking a Unit 3 and 4 subject have the day before their examination as a study day and they are also not required to attend classes on the day of their examination. Mr Andrew Cho will be going over examination rules and protocols with the students on Monday 25 October so I would encourage a conversation at home about these requirements as we did need to remove a number of mobile phones before the GAT. Year 12 IB examinations commence on Tuesday 26 October and VCE written examinations on Wednesday 27 October.

Co-curricular Leadership Positions

Years 10 and 11 students are currently having level assemblies to outline the range and application process for co-curricular leadership positions for 2022. These activities provide a wide range of opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate leadership skills so I encourage students to submit an application.

2021 IB Visual Art Virtual Exhibition

2021 IB VISUAL ART VIRTUAL EXHIBITION.

Welcome to the Tintern Grammar 2021 IB Visual Art Virtual Exhibition. This exhibition celebrates the folio works created by our 2021 Year 12 IB Diploma students:
  • Jess Hobson
  • Halle Hupfeld
  • Alana Lawson
  • Seb Nagendran
  • Kaitlyn Oldaker
The visual arts are an integral part of everyday life, permeating all levels of human creativity, expression, communication and understanding. The IB Diploma Programme Visual Arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. It is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media. The course is designed for students who want to go on to study visual arts in higher education as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.

The final year of candidates for the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts at Tintern Grammar is available online for you to enjoy at your own pace, in your own time, virtually. You can use the arrow key or click & drag function of the cursor and explore the pieces in any order you choose. You can zoom in closer to the works and view them individually, and read the artist statements regarding the works by simply clicking on the image.

Green Team supports the FareShare FootSteps Challenge in 2021

Green Team supports the FareShare FootSteps Challenge in 2021

From 3 -17 October this year, five students; Annabelle Guscott, Jasmine Boss, Zoe McKinlay, Meleah Byth and myself, and two teachers; Ms. Anne Bortolussi and Mrs. Megan Scholz, participated in the FareShare FootSteps Challenge. Over the two weeks, we walked 799km and raised $2828 . The money raised will go towards FareShare, who, for over 20 years “has been rescuing quality food and cooking it into nutritious meals for people doing it tough”. The Tintern Grammar Team’s contribution will help produce over 3,500 meals for people in need.

The FareShare FootSteps Challenge was designed to represent how each of the FareShare chefs walk approximately 150km every week “as they keep pace with [the] demand for free, nutritious meals”. As of October 18, the 709 participants in this challenge have walked over 54,000kms and raised over $291,000 – helping to produce over 388,000 meals which will be delivered to people struggling to access nutritious food.

FareShare has a four-step process; rescue, cook, grow, feed. They rescue quality food from landfill, gather donations, and collect surplus food from supermarkets, which they cook into over 12,000 nutritious meals a day. 6 ways to adjust to living with COVID-19 in the community.

6 ways to adjust to living with COVID -19 in the community.

With lockdowns starting to ease in some parts of the country and COVID-19 likely to be a thing for some time for the whole of Australia, you could be experiencing some mixed emotions. You might be feeling excited about regaining some freedom, but also anxious about re- engaging with the outside world.

However, you’re feeling about the easing of restrictions, know that your experience is valid. It might take some time before you feel ‘back to normal’, or you might need to establish a new ‘normal’ for yourself – and that’s okay. Here are 6 steps for easing into life living with COVID-19:

1. Go at your own pace. As life begins to change, remember that you can take things at your own pace. Just because your friend is going out all the time, it doesn’t mean you have to. Keep in mind that your feelings may change on a daily basis depending on what you are doing.

2. Set boundaries. It’s common to feel nervous about contacting/passing on COVID-19 as things start to reopen. Have a think about what you are and aren’t comfortable with, and communicate this to family and friends. If you don’t feel up to hugging yet, that’s okay. if you would prefer to socialise outside, then keep on catching up with family and friends outside.

3. Do the things that keep you well. As restrictions ease, it could be easy to let self care slip. But it’s more important that ever that you keep doing the things that help you stay well. remember to make time for hobbies and fun, practice mindfulness, do whatever exercise feels right for you and make sure you get enough sleep .

4. Be kind to yourself. Try not to judge yourself for how you are feeling. We are going through an extremely challenging time and it’s natural to feel all sorts of emotions. You could try some positive self-talk such as “I’ll get through this challenging time, one day at a time”. Be kind to yourself, and accepting the way you are feeling, can also include looking at ways to manage your anxiety and stress.

5. Appreciate the little things. Even if you’re feeling stressed about restrictions easing and living with COVID-19, you can remind yourself of the exciting things to come . What are you looking forward to doing when the time feels right: seeing friends, going out for coffee, playing a team sport? Remind yourself that you’ll enjoy these fun things again soon , while acknowledging that it’s ok to take as much time as you need to adjust.

6. Talk to friends and family. If you feel you could us a bit of extra support, consider talking to a trusted friend or family member, sometimes this is the best way to deal with an issue that is bothering you.

Although living life with COVID-19 will definitely take some getting used to, you will be able to manage it. Try the steps above and remember that extra support is always available if you need it.
