Welcome

In Issue 12, our welcome article is from the Director of Early Learning, Kristin De Vos

The Importance of Play

‘All we do is play’ is a common myth heard by Early Childhood Educators. It is true that play is a big part of the Early Year’s curriculum, however, almost 90% of the child’s brain develops in the first five years and play is one of the best ways to support that development. When we stop to think about the exponential growth that happens from birth, it is amazing. In those first five years children learn to walk, run, jump, talk, socialise, gain greater ability over their fine and gross motor skills, begin to understand the social complexities of society, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and their impact on it. And most of this is learnt through play. From the first Peek a Boo games we play to pretend cups of tea and coffee that is shared with the children, they are learning. Play is the child’s natural language. Through play experiences children learn about themselves and the world around them. Play is a valuable vehicle for children’s learning and through it, children construct and deconstruct ideas, test theories, explore social connections and engage with the world.

While it may look like ‘just’ play from the outside, embedded into these experiences educators are teaching strategies to support and strengthen a child’s development. They are supporting their problem-solving skills, their curiosity, regulation skills, communication and sharing. This makes play very beneficial and meaningful for children.

In the Early Learning Centre (ELC) we use this play and children’s interests not only in subject matter but also to plan experiences for the children’s continual growth and learning.

Play allows us to respond to children’s ideas and developmental needs. Too much input from educators can compromise play. Our role should be seen as giving encouragement, adding to play sequences, and promoting child-directed activities. This all leads to children reaching higher levels of cognitive, social-emotional, and linguistic abilities. Play is the driver of development.

We are very careful to make our play experiences purposeful. It is a balance between the autonomy the children feel in driving their own learning and the need for Educators to ensure that their play is purposeful and continues to develop deep meaningful engagement.

Woven into our curriculum or purposeful play we have intentional teaching moments where we take a direct teaching goal and work with the children to achieve this goal or outcome, guided play where we use the play to guide children to be successful in the learning outcome and child-led play where we sit in the moment and enjoy and share the joy of playing with the children as they learn.

Play is learning and learning should be play-filled, and I am lucky enough to have my days filled with the joy of learning.

VALE Class of 2023

Vale, meaning goodbye in Latin, is what we do at our Valedictory Service each year and we did for our Class of 2023 last Friday. As this note from Aleayah in Year 2 aptly asks, ‘You are finished school, are you sad or happy?’

The Valedictory Service is an occasion of great joy and great sadness, as in order to move onto the next part of their life journey, students need to say goodbye to school life. For some of our students, they were very ready to leave and for others, the move seems challenging. One student commented, ‘But this is all I have ever known’.

We cannot hold on to the Class of 2023, but we can be sure we have done everything we can to equip them for the adventure that awaits them.

Each student was given a candle with a School Compass as the lid, symbolic of the light of Jesus they are taking into the world and the importance of the Compass in making decisions and choices on the path ahead.

Vale Class of 2023, you are each amazing and we look forward to hearing of your adventures beyond Tintern.

Grace and Peace

Curriculum Matters

Whilst we received our NAPLAN results for our current Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 cohorts in July, the government is only this week releasing the State and National results, which will allow us to compare our students’ rankings with their peers across the state and country.  We have seen some excellent early indicators from the individual data already provided and more detailed analysis of our results will be forthcoming, once we have had a chance to do some analysis and comparison.

It must be noted that VCAA have altered the Grading bands for NAPLAN this year, moving from 10 bands to four Proficiency Levels, therefore comparative growth data with previous NAPLAN results from 2021 is not available this year, but will be available for students who are tested in 2025. For further information about these changes, click here

We have farewelled our Year 12s from Tintern and they are now preparing for the final examinations. VCE examinations already are underway in Term 4, with practical examinations in music, drama, theatre studies and oral languages commencing on Monday 2 October and our students’ written examinations commencing with English and EAL on Tuesday 24 October. We wish all of our Unit 4 students continued good health and focussed study time over the coming weeks.

This also is a busy time for our Years 10 to 11 students, as they prepare for the upcoming brief examination period, from 21-24 November and our Year 9s, who will be having examinations from 23-24 November prior to attending their Summer Expeditions from 27 November. We trust all students will do their best and take away as much learning as possible from the outcomes of this period.

Our ongoing portal-based progressive reporting system continues to make visible class results and detailed feedback to students and parents in Years 7 to 12. This allows parents to access current data on the progress of their children in all of their academic studies at any time. Through the school’s Portal interface our staff are able to provide gradings for tasks, and also include formative comments, giving feedback on the level of achievement, areas for improvement and strategies to achieve those improvements. These regular updates and more expansive feedback on individual assessments have kept parents of our Years 7-12 students better informed of their child’s progress throughout 2023 and provided occasions for more timely and useful reflections, regular conversations and opportunities for goal setting between parents, students and staff. The Years 7-11 end-of-semester reports will be a composite of these Progressive Reporting Assessment Tasks (PRATs), with the aforementioned gradings and comments, alongside gradings for behavioural indicators.

Please note: Monday 27 November is a non-school day for Years 7 to 11 students, allowing staff time to correct exams and tests and to write reports. Tuesday 28 November is Exam hand back Day for Years 10 and 11. Our current Years 10 and 11 students then will be involved in their 2024 Conferences from Wednesday 29 November to Friday 1 December. Year 9s will have exams handed back on Monday 4 December, upon their return from their Summer Expeditions. Years 7 and 8 will continue regular 2023 classes until Friday 1 December.

Our Transition period into the 2024 timetable for students currently in Years 7 to 11 will commence on Monday 4 December.

Some subjects (particularly VCE) will commence a unit of 2024 work during the Transition period whilst others will consolidate units of work and prepare for next level studies. It is, therefore, imperative that students attend and continue to maintain their focus for this period immediately after the examination/testing sessions. All students in Years 7 to 11 will continue with their transition classes through to the last day of term, Monday 11 December.

Chamber Choir bring musical joy to aged care residents

On a wet and windy afternoon in week one of Term 4, our Senior Girls’ Chamber Choir headed off to the Blue Cross Aged Care Facility in Box Hill to perform a concert of enjoyable choral numbers, interspersed with some delightful vocal solos from our Unit 4 VCE Music Performance students, Tash, Ella and Emily who were joined by Unit 2 Music student, Ashley. The residents were quite entranced with the girls’ angelic voices.

Celebration Evening provided a feast of music

A huge thank you to all music staff and students involved in our musical performances at Celebration Evening last week. The calibre of performances was exceptional in all cases, and this is attributable to the hard work undertaken in rehearsals for many weeks prior to taking to the stage at Robert Blackwood Hall on 9 October.

Senior Visual Arts & Design Exhibition

On Friday evening 13 October, the Senior Visual Arts & Design Exhibition was officially and warmly declared open by Arts advocate, past parent, and Tintern Board member, Rosemary Bennett. The 12 students who completed VCE Visual Communication Design and VCE Art Creative Practice shared their folios with family and friends, exhibiting and celebrating the culmination of hard work and diverse, creative endeavour.  See below some images from the opening and some of our talented VCE students with their works.

This exhibition is currently on display in the Visual Arts & Design space until 17 November and would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the entire Visual Art team of staff and teachers.

Sporting Champions in the Girls’ Junior School

Charlotte | Year 4

This year, we have had two of our Junior School students represent Victoria in their respective sports, demonstrating great commitment and passion! We are so proud of the effort that these girls put into their training and would like to share a tribute to their accomplishments with you.

Through her dedication and strong commitment to swimming, Charlotte Butlin was selected as 1 of 25 10-12 year old students in Victoria to represent TeamVic at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championship in Sydney. Competing in both individual events and team relays, Charlotte achieved personal best times in all of her races, showing her commitment and work ethic to achieve her goals. She took in every moment of the experience, making friends with her teammates in what was a wonderful and supportive environment. A truly incredible achievement Charlotte!

Eloise | Year 6

Eloise Fox utilised her strength and power when attending the School Sport Victoria TeamVic Athletics trials. Throwing an enormous 26m in discus, Eloise was selected for TeamVic Athletics and will compete in November at the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships. We look forward to supporting Eloise during this event and wish her the best of luck as she shines in her event!

BJS Softball

Congratulations to our Years 5 and 6 Interschool Softball Team who competed in the Divisional Finals on last Wednesday and were pipped by two runs in their final game in a very exciting round robin, and therefore just missing out on progressing to the State Championships. The boys’ sense of fair play and attitude has been exemplary all year and makes them the champions to us!

EISM 5 a side Soccer Competition

On Wednesday 11 October, Tintern Grammar competed in the annual EISM 5 a side Soccer Competition at Knox Regional Soccer Centre. On a warm day, Tintern Grammar had four teams competing, a Junior Boys’ team, Junior Girls’ team, Senior Boys’ team, and a Senior Girls’ team. The Senior boys team played very well on the day, winning their first two matches, and playing off in a semi-final against the King David School. The Senior boys played well in the semi-final but unfortunately lost to King David, who were eventual winners of the competition. The Senior girls, Junior girls and Junior boys team found the competition tough. They all tried their best during each match but unfortunately weren’t able to win a game. Congratulations to Jonty Benfield in the Senior Boys’ team, who was awarded equal best and fairest player along with winning the leading goal scorer for the day.

Congratulations to Year 9 student Jonty, who recently competed in the 2023 National Youth Championships for Boys Soccer in Sydney. His team, Victoria Blue made it through the finals against strong competition and in challenging weather. In the Grand Final against QLD Jonty’s team dominated from the start, with Jonty contributing greatly as Goalkeeper to the 3-0 win. As the only player in history to have won the National Youth Championships twice, it is an amazing achievement. Adding to the fact that these premierships are back-to-back and that he has represented two different states, Jonty can be rightly proud of his efforts throughout the tournament.

We congratulate Year 8 student Ethan who was selected to represent Victoria at the 2023 Australian Youth Volleyball Championships recently. He played 11 games in total and led his teammates through to the finals to win Bronze (the only one medal for all Victorian teams in this boy’s group).

Father’s PJ & Pizza Night

We love to come together as a community and celebrate the special people in our lives. In Term 3 we showered our appreciation over the special males who support us each and every day. Fathers, grandfathers and uncles were all celebrated and acknowledged for their love and support for every child.

Each child took their time crafting the perfect gift and finding the perfect way to describe why our special men were so spectacular and why we are so grateful for them:

I love when daddy helps me tidy up my room. – Gabe.

‘I’m grateful for my dad because he is really funny, and he’s always nice and kind’. – Sam.

‘My daddy let’s me have ice cream on other days, not just Friday’. – Marley.

‘I’m grateful for my dad because when mum is away he’ll play with me, and he’s always my friend’. – Trisha.

To top this celebration off, we invited our dads, grandpas and uncles to join us for a PJ & Pizza night at the ELC. Everyone arrived looking very cosy and left with big smiles and a full stomach thanks to Farro Pizza.

Footy Week

Our last week of Term 3 was a sporting celebration in preparation for the upcoming AFL & NRL Grand finals. Everyone was invited to dress in their favourite football teams’ uniform and display their support through song, selected art activities and a special FMS lesson.

Team colours and songs decorated each classroom as children were invited to make colourful paper chains, and colour in team jerseys as talk of who’ll take the final win were discussed.

On the Thursday everyone set out to the Oval for a footy themed FMS lesson. Handball targets, goal kicking practise and fast sprints were on the agenda to capture the spirt of the game. We were blessed with the most perfect sunny day which showered us with sunshine as everyone showed off their skills.

By the end of the week, it’s fair to say all moods were uplifted as we said goodbye to a phenomenal week and a very productive Term Three.

Girls’ Junior School News

Last Monday was the annual Celebration Evening for our Secondary School; a time whereby our community gathers in Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University to celebrate the achievements of our students this year. It is always a highlight for me as I catch up with students who were once in the Girls’ Junior School and see the accomplishments of many of our girls. At this event it is also a time whereby we farewell our Year 12 students and wish them well as they move into their swot vac and then exam period. It is a pleasure to thank them for their contribution to our school, and to see the many accomplishments of the cohort.

This year, I was particularly moved to hear the speech of our Girls’ School Captain, Natasha Gillam who started her Tintern journey way back in Pre-Prep in the ELC and then followed through into Prep (which you can see in the smiley photo). Tash is well known to many of our girls, particularly through her support of our girls earlier this year in our production. When she was in Prep with Mrs Whitcher, the then Head of Junior School, Mrs Riddell, commented that ‘Natasha is a confident student who serves as an excellent role model for those around her’, qualities she very obviously continued with throughout her Tintern journey.

In her speech on Monday evening, Tash reminded us to be grateful for the opportunities that we have. To be grateful for our wonderful community and to embrace the many offerings that are placed for us each day. I have thought a lot about this speech this week, particularly as Wednesday was International Day of the Girl. Tash reminded me how lucky our girls are, on Thursday at Prep-Year 2 Assembly we explored the plight of other girls around the world. The girls were visibly shocked to hear that many girls don’t have the opportunity to go to school, and that in some places girls stay home to prepare the house so their brother can go to school.

I shared with the girls the story, The Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai and we discussed what our wish would be if we had a magic pencil. For me, it was easy… my wish is that each little girl around the world has the same opportunities that Tash, and all the other Tintern girls have each day. That they too could learn, celebrate, and belong to such an exceptional community. The girls agreed that this was a great wish!

We shared stories of our Alumni, women who have gone on to follow their passions like AFLW player Megan Mc Donald, Pilot Jac Cottee, Pianist and Composer Penelope Thwaites and many other incredible women making a difference to our world.  As we farewell our Year 12 Class of 2023, we wish them all the best for a successful future. That they live fulfilled lives, and that our world is made a much better place because of their contributions and commitment to our Tintern Compass Values.

AHOY!

We commenced the term with a fun and energetic look at the many rich and varied opportunities on offer this term. We are about to sail into Term 4 and want to think of the upcoming journey in terms of being on a ship. Sometimes it will be smooth sailing, other times may become a bit choppy and a few may be like heading into a strong wind. To help navigate the term ahead we introduced the acronym AHOY!

A – Ask questions

H – Help one another

O– Be Open Minded and keep a positive attitude

Y – You can do it.

The first two weeks back at school have been their usual hectic self!

Celebration Evening

The start to Term 4 is always full of amazing activities and events including our annual Celebration Evening held at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University. At the event we celebrated our Year 12 students reaching the end of their schooling journey, awarded prizes for VCE subjects awards and presented Compass, Academic and Overall Excellence Awards to selected Years 7 to 11 students. Included in the evening was also a number of beautiful music pieces by our talented musicians, as well as some of the key scenes from our school musical for 2023, Chicago. It is a wonderful night of reflection and celebration of the many fantastic achievements by our students this year.

The last days of Year 12 for the Class of 2023

Thursday 12 October was the last official day of classes for our Year 12 students after which they now spend their time preparing for their upcoming examinations. On their last day they celebrated with a dress-up day, a barbeque lunch and ice-cream, as well as a water fight down on the farm. It was a lot of fun for them and a great way to finish their school.

On Friday 13 October we held our Valedictory Service. This is to officially recognise our Year 12 students and their families in front of the whole secondary school and then the junior school. Our students were presented with a candle embossed with the School Compass as a gift from the school, signifying both light and direction for where they are going. After they left the service with the secondary school, they then walked around the Girls’ and Boys’ Junior Schools’ with the Prep to Grade 6s lining the sides of the path giving high fives and lots of cheering. The Year 12s and their parents then joined staff for a morning tea before both genders gathered around the Compass to sing the girls’ song and the boys’ song. It was a very emotional day for many, with the reality of school nearing its conclusion and the touch of nervousness as to what lies ahead. No matter what is in store for them, they will always be welcomed back at Tintern as proud and successful Alumni.

Night of the Notables

Our Year 7 students have been working on their Night of the Notable presentation with the event occurring on Tuesday 17 October. This involves taking on the persona of someone of significant note from history. They research all aspects of their lives and then present as that person on the night, sharing information and answering questions about their notable. It is a great night that enables our Year 7 students to develop a deep understanding into someone of historical significance.

Year 7 2024 Transition

Our Year 7 students for 2024 spent their second day of transition at the school in the first week of this term. They participated in a number of fun activities that are designed to continually develop their relationships and connections in preparation for starting Year 7 next year. Our Middle School leaders and others helped to run the fun activities, as well as sharing their own tips and tricks for surviving Year 7. The key message to our new Year 7s of 2024, was to involve yourself in as much as you can, especially in their middle years.

VCE Art & Design Show

Friday 13 October saw the opening of our VCE Art & Design show for 2023. This event runs for a few weeks and highlights the incredible work done by our current VCE art students. The event was opened by former parent and current board member Rosemary Bennett who spoke incredibly well around the importance of art and creativity in today’s world for everyone, not just students. The display will remain up for a number of weeks. Read the Art Matters article

As our Year 12 students approach their final examinations, it is important for all year levels to remain focussed and dedicated to their studies. Our Years 9 to 11 students will have their own set of examinations later this year. The habits of study, hard work and persistence need to be developed right from the beginning of Year 7 so that students are prepared by the time they reach their own Year 12 final examinations. The focus through these earlier years continues to be on the learning behaviours associated with each subject and students’ ability to improve this for all of their subjects.

I wish our Year 12 all the very best for the next 4 – 5 weeks and look forward to seeing them all at the Valedictory Dinner in late November.

A reminder to all of our families that we have a mid-term break on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 November.
