Sport Matters

Mitchell Snowball, a year 10 student recently competed in bike riding in Japan. Below he talks about his experiences and how he went. On behalf of the school, we congratulate Mitchell and wish him all the best in future endeavours.

The two races were UCI Category 2, Under 19 races, which are a level down from a World Cup. The race was located about 2 and a half hours north east of Tokyo in a village called Utsunomiya. The track included some very technical features like 35% climbs and single track (mountain bike track) descents which were covered in roots.

The first race was pretty nerve racking as I didn’t know how I’d compare to the Japanese. I rode well and came through with a 7th place. Once I knew where I’d expect myself to finish there’s a lot less stress, so the second day my goal was to just ride my own race, stay smooth and have fun. I had a bit of a battle out with a fellow Australian in the last two laps where I took out 5th place in a sprint finish.

I’m really happy with my experience of racing internationally in Japan and look forward to racing at top age next year.
