News From Year 10

Corey Dickson Update…

Corey competed in the Australian Athletic Championships in Sydney and the heat added an extra challenge. We offer our congratulations for his achievements as Corey came 7th in the Under 17 5000 metre walk in a time of 24 minutes and 39 seconds – only 19 seconds off his personal best). Corey also competed in the Under 20s age group and came a 10th (beating his personal best by 1 minute 48 seconds) in a time of 24 minutes 39 seconds. Corey continues to set high goals for his performances and he is aiming to qualify for the 2020 World Junior Championships. There will be many hours of training ahead of him and we all offer our support and best wishes.

SWAT (Student Wellbeing Action Teams)

Rachelle Jones from the Maroondah Youth Services Team visited Tintern last week to discuss the highly successful leadership initiative for schools in the City of Maroondah. Our Year 10 students can self-nominate for the program that consists of a 1-day training seminar on Thursday 26 April and a 3-day camp from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 May that has all been funded by Maroondah City Council. Interested students must email Mrs Ruckert by Friday 23 March. I particularly encourage students who have not held leadership positions to apply. Student projects are supported by a Youth Worker and will relate to a wellbeing issue relevant at Tintern Grammar.

Mindfulness and Guided Meditations

This week is a particularly busy week and we are allowing time for the Year 10s to explore mindfulness using sites such as Smiling Mind. The students are encouraged to download the Apps and work through the different levels. In level assembly, the students were reminded about ‘Mindfulness 101′ or ‘Exploring the Breath’ and watched the video ‘The Science of Mindfulness’. Families can refer to the materials on the following sites and students are just using the free options. We have also been monitoring sleep and the Year 10 average is 7½ hours sleep per night, which is below the recommendations for this age group of between 8 and 9 hours.

Morrisby Online Careers Testing – Thursday 3 May

On the morning of Thursday 3 May, all Year 10 students will participate in the Morrisby Online Careers testing. There will be a series of computer-based tests to help students identify their underlying strengths including verbal, numerical, abstract, spatial and mechanical reasoning. This information when combined with interests and personal qualities produces a range of career suggestions that are useful when exploring future options. There will be a feedback evening for families with their son or daughter on the evening of Thursday 3 May commencing at 7.30pm in Area C. The reports will be distributed to families before a presentation from Career Analysts to provide a framework to interpret the results. Please refer to the following link for further information:

Further information and an email will be sent to families early in Term 2 with all of the relevant information.
