News From the Head of the Senior College

Wow, already we are in the final stretch of Term 1! It has been an eventful term with Year Level Conferences, House Swimming, EISM weekly sport and the Swimming Carnival, Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day and, of course, the academic work that has to be covered in Term 1.

As we begin Term 2 much of our academic focus in the Senior College will be on preparing our Year 10 and 11 students for their semester examinations and all Year 12 students, along with Year 11 students undertaking a Year 12 study, will also be taking the GAT on Wednesday 13 June. In addition, our Year 10 students and their families (along with Year 9 students and their families) will be provided with the opportunities to hear about our IB, VCE and VET offerings with the IB Information Night occurring on the evening of Monday 7 May and our Pathways Evening scheduled for the evening of Wednesday 13 June. Both of these evenings will be more fully detailed closer to the time and both are held to assist students and their families in making choices about what specific pathway and what subjects will be chosen in Year 11 and 12.

Some significant events that I would like to remind parents of coming up in Term 2:

  • House Athletics Tuesday 17 April
  • Tintern Grammar Horse Trials at Wandin Park on Saturday and Sunday 28-29 April
  • Our annual Cathedral Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Sunday 20 May. I look forward to seeing Senior College students and families at this event and remind students that it is an expectation that they attend the Cathedral Service.

The School Musical, ‘South Pacific’

After many, many rehearsals this year’s school musical, ‘South Pacific’, is set to hit the stage this week. Performances are scheduled for Wednesday 21 March (preview night) and then from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 March. I wish all students and staff involved in the production every success for these performances. It is fantastic to see our community members get involved in every aspect of the production as performers or assisting with backstage, make-up, costumes, ushering, sound and lighting. Term 1 Interim Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews

Secondary Interim Reports can now be viewed in the Parent Centre of myTintern Portal. The Interim Reports indicate to Parents, Guardians and Students’ the progress made so far in each subject prior to parent-student-teacher interviews. The achievement levels indicated by teachers reflect a student’s performance in assessment tasks so far this term.

Our Secondary School Parent-Student-Teacher interviews are held over three nights, spread across two weeks: Tuesday 20 March (tonight), Tuesday 27 March and Wednesday 28 March, between 4 – 8pm on each of these nights. Interviews are of 10-minute duration.

Teachers are instructed to request an interview if a student’s progress is deemed ‘Low’ or ‘Very Low’, and they may also request interviews with other students. If a teacher does not request an interview, this will be designated as ‘Optional’. Parents, of course, may request interviews with any of their child’s subject or Mentor Group teachers, regardless of a request being made by the teacher.

Bookings for interviews are now open in the portal Students are strongly encouraged if possible to come to the interviews to be part of a three-way conversation about their learning and growth as part of our commitment to the 3-way partnership between students, teachers and parents. If you are experiencing any difficulties booking interviews please refer to the attachment in the email sent to parents or contact Annie Fairweather on 98457830.

As students complete more learning and assessment tasks over the course of the semester, a clearer picture of their progress will appear and this will be reflected in the end of semester reports.

The Interim Reporting process and Parent-Student-Teacher interviews are a valuable opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers and discuss your child’s progress and I look forward to seeing many of you at these evenings.
