Concerto Showcase once again highlights top Tintern musicians
As always, it has been a busy time recently in the Music department, but especially for the Tintern Symphony Orchestra as they’ve been preparing the orchestral accompaniment for four works for the biennial concerto showcase which took place last Thursday 14 June. Following the Preliminary Concerto Concert in March, four soloists; Holly Fryer, Ron Chen, Clarisse Liew and Molly Fleming have been rehearsing their concerto movements with the orchestra in preparation for the evening. It has been a big task for all musicians with many hours of rehearsals, and we have been fortunate to also have had support from members of staff who stepped in to play in the orchestra. On the night, the Wind Symphony played an overture, followed by the Concertino by Chaminade (soloist: flautist Holly Fryer), the second movement from the Yellow River Piano Concerto by Yin Chengzong and Chu Wanghua (soloist: Ron Chen), the Adagio from Mendelssohn’s second piano concerto (soloist: Molly Fleming) and the final movement of Mendelssohn’s violin concerto (soloist: Clarisse Liew). The performance was followed by a lovely supper provided by the Friends of Music.
It was a wonderful evening of music and it is safe to say that all performers felt a sense of achievement after hours of practice learning many notes. On behalf of the soloists, I can say that we are grateful for the opportunity that has certainly been an exciting and enriching experience for us. We also extend a big thank you to Tintern’s Head of Strings, Mr Tim Veldman for his pivotal role in organising, running and conducting the orchestra for the showcase.

Students delight residents at local Aged Care Facility
On Tuesday 5 June, six Tintern Grammar students took a short bus ride with Mrs Bezaire and Ms Mckenzie (accompanist) to the Olivet Aged Care Facility in Ringwood. These students gave willingly of their musical talents to bring much joy to the residents of the home and are to be commended for providing such an enjoyable morning of entertainment. Our performers were Zoe Chen (Violin, Year 7), Isaac Hong (Clarinet, Year 8), Alec Chen (Saxophone, Year 9), Lilli Holliday-Ryder (Clarinet, Year 9), Jessica Hobson (Piano, Year 9) and Steven Zhang (Piano, Year 12).
Marvellous Music Camp looms on our horizon!
It’s called a ‘camp’, but it’s a day camp (i.e. you get to go home and sleep in your own bed at night). All student members of major ensembles are reminded that the musical madness and mayhem of our Annual Music Camp looms on the horizon. This event serves to provide some intensive rehearsal time for ensembles to prepare for our Annual Concert (on 10 August) and also is our main learning time for the fabulous finale item for the Annual Concert! Put the dates in your calendars now: Friday 27 July (after school), then Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July. Letters with the camp timetable will be coming home soon.
