Over the last two terms, I worked alongside a group of Year 12 Maths students (Simon Lan, Aidyn Malojer and Jason Zhang) on a tutoring project for students from Years 6-8. The project was designed to “horizontally” enhance the mathematic skills of high performing students, helping them develop their logical thinking and expression of ideas as opposed to teaching material from higher year levels.
The tutoring sessions took place every fortnight and we used our own teaching material, which was carefully compiled from past questions in mathematical competitions. We felt that the experience was just as beneficial for our students as it was for us, offering a chance to experience what it is like to be a teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed the project and was glad that I got the opportunity to lead it as part of my duties as Maths Captain.
