Creating and Exploring a Variety of Media
It has been a hive of activity in the Junior School Art room as the girls have been making and creating a variety of artworks. The girls explored letter designs in an array of different media across all year levels. Every year level completed their self-portraits which has been a long-standing tradition at Tintern. We completed the highly awaited Mother’s Day gift. All the girls look forward to seeing what their year level will be making and creating. This year, the Preps created a mixed media portrait of their mother. The girls drew their mother in oil pastel with a painted background. The Year 1’s created a ceramic heart which they hand-painted. Clay certainly was the preferred medium with the Year 2’s making a clay heart dish. Year 3’s created a hand painted and embellished box for their mother. Year 4’s created a mixed media key chain and the Year 5’s made a beautiful hand painted ceramic wall tile. The Year 6’s explored acrylic paint on canvas and enjoyed creating a still life painting for their mother to enjoy. All the girls across every year level have worked with great enthusiasm and creativity.
Year 1 Girls
This term, Year 1 girls are excitedly watching the progress of their bean seeds sprouting radicles (roots) as part of our Plant to Plate Integrated Studies unit. We have sewn a mini cress garden and explored the steps to do this via a procedural text. Down at the Farm, Mrs G helped us investigate what makes a healthy soil so we started our own compost bin to avoid food scraps causing methane and leachate in landfill sites.
In the STEAM centre, Mrs Campbell showed us how to make pollinators. Insects and birds pollinate plants by spreading the pollen from their bodies between flowers. This helps plants produce seeds. Our colourful honeybees gathered pollen from a variety of flowers to mimic the pollination process. Jelly crystals make great pollen and the senior students in the library sure wished they could join in our fun activity. Did you know that if we don’t have pollinators, we don’t have seeds. If we don’t have seeds, we don’t have plants, ….you get the gist. Thank goodness for pollinators!
In Maths, we are doing calculations with money. We looked closely at all the Australian coins then ran our own playground marketplace. The economics of supply and demand, along with some pretty shifty price fixing was very evident. There are a few successful businesswomen in 1A, that’s for sure.

Year 5 Girls
Term 2 for 5A has seen the students commence their Integrated unit of study on Business and Economics.
This has seen students start planning and organising for their Business Expo Day in the last week of this term. Throughout the term, students need to work in small groups to plan what products they will sell by conducting market research, designing and creating advertisements and researching a nominated charity for their profits to go towards afterwards.
In our class, we have also started a classroom economy called, ‘Benson Bucks’. Students have to write a cover letter and CV to apply for various jobs in the classroom such as property manager, accountant, banker, tax collector, tech support and law enforcement. They are paid a wage and need to save their money to pay for rent of their seats, tax and supplies around the classroom. Each fortnight they get paid for their job and have to pay rent for their seats. Students also have the opportunity to deposit and withdraw any of their Benson Bucks. The students have been diligently been saving their money so that they can “purchase” their own chair instead of renting. It is a great opportunity for students to develop real-life skills.
