Boys’ Middle School News

Last week our Year 9 boys and girls ventured to Camp Howqua for their Winter Camp where they were white water rafting, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, completing commando courses and much more. It was a wonderful week with activities that challenged our boys really well, whilst also providing them some time out from their normal daily lives of school, homework, technology, etc. The boys and girls continue to get to know each other more with activities and games on the camp that bring them together in a really fun way. No doubt there were some pretty tired boys arriving home on Friday afternoon.

On Monday 13 August, the Years 7 and 8 boys were treated to a musical performance from a gentleman by the name of Bernard Mangakahia on the theme of Polynesian music. He performed a number of song and dance items which included audience participation pieces, culminating in a group performance of the Haka.

Our Year 8 boys had their House Bowling competition on Thursday last week which saw Dann Watt House come out as the champion House, closely followed by Butterss Cross. In terms of individual scores it was Max Adam who topped the list with a magnificent score of 133, whilst Benjamin Zhou was the only other player to top the 100 mark with a score of 103. It was a really fun afternoon with lots of laughs, but also some serious bowling from some of the boys!!

Our Year 7s have recently been introduced to a program we run called “Night of the Notables.” This has them selecting a person of note from the past that they have an interest in. The students spend time researching their notable and what they have accomplished. It culminates in the students presenting in an expo style format to parents and community and is always a fantastic night. Details on this event will be coming shortly.

I am sending 10 staff on October 18 to the Malvern Town Hall at 7pm to see a lady by the name of Maggie Dent. She is a counsellor, former teacher and mother of four boys who does a lot of work around boys and growing up, as well as boys and school. It promises to be a fantastic presentation and I would encourage any parents who may be interested in such a presentation to log on to her website and consider booking a seat:

A reminder to our Year 8 families that we have our new and exciting event called “The Smoothie Bar” happening on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 September with a parent evening on the Wednesday 19 September. More details will be coming soon, but please put this one in your diary.
