Paul Jarman returns to Tintern
Paul Jarman will return to Tintern Grammar later this week to connect with more students as he continues the process of composing our new school anthem. We announced in our final newsletter in 2020 that, with the support of our Friends of Music committee, the school is commissioning Paul to write our new song. In the process, we are not decommissioning our old songs – they will still feature at community events and student assemblies in the future, as an acknowledgement of the historical journey which has brought us to where we are today. It is time, however, for us to also sing a new song which brings our boys’ and girls’ voices together as one through a more contemporary and customized musical vehicle which reflects where the school is placed heading into 2021. Paul will be meeting more students and staff as he continues to workshop our new song and we look forward to launching it in the coming months.
Sadness at the passing of Mrs Lyn Kelson
It was with great sadness that the school received news that Mrs Lyn Kelson, wife of longstanding benefactor of the school’s Music Faculty, Mr Michael Kelson, had passed away on Christmas Eve, 2020. Many staff and students will recall seeing Mrs Kelson on stage at annual assemblies, as she joined Mr Kelson in gifting music awards to numerous music students over the past 17 years. Lyn was an elegant, witty and gracious lady who loved music as much as her husband and joined with Michael and their whole family in honouring the memory of Michael’s mother’s, Mrs Ilma Kelson, former Director of Music at Tintern GGS (1958-1973), through the granting of these awards.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Michael, his children, Kate and Anthony and the whole Kelson Family at this difficult time.
We will be very pleased to welcome Michael Kelson to Tintern in Term 2. He is very much looking forward to being able to come back on campus again to enjoy the musical talents of our students on stage. Applications for Kelson Music Awards are open and further information and application forms are available from Mrs Feenane in the Music Office (music@tintern.vic.edu.au). Applications close Friday 12 March.
Music ensembles gearing up excitedly for rehearsals
After a very quiet year, last year, members of our Year 7-12 Ensembles are excitedly anticipating the commencement of ‘live’ rehearsals for 2021 over the coming weeks, so now is the time for new students and existing musicians and singers who would like to join a band/orchestra/choir to come along and meet the crowd as they start to learn new songs and pieces. If you are new to Tintern and interested in joining a choir or instrumental ensemble, please check the table below and feel free to come along to try out a group before making a full commitment to it. Even if you are not a new student, you are still welcome to join our musical ‘family’! You will be made to feel welcome and you will meet many like-minded musicians who enjoy getting together to rehearse and perform music on a regular basis. All ensembles are welcoming new members (apart from a few auditioned ensembles, marked * in table).
If you are unsure as to which group you should join, please come up and introduce yourself to Mrs Feenane in the Music Office and she will be able to help you, or she will guide you to a music teacher who will be able to advise you.

Music Lockers for hire
There are a limited number of lockable music lockers available for hire in the Senior Music Department corridor at a cost of $10 per term. These are particularly useful for students in ensembles and who have lessons upstairs in the Music Department, allowing them to store instruments securely during the school day. Funds from the hire of these lockers go directly to the Tintern Friends of Music Committee who, in turn, support the musical endeavours of our students through purchases of equipment and funding of special musical experiences. Please email or call our Music Administrator, Mrs Elizabeth Feenane, for further details (efeenane@tintern.vic.edu.au or 9845 7837)
Friends of Music committee seeking new members
We are ever so grateful for the ongoing support of the parents on our Friends of Music committee. With four parents of Year 12 students leaving the committee last year, this community group is keen to welcome some new members to their ranks to support the activities of our Tintern musicians. Please contact fom@tintern.vic.edu.au if you would like more information or would like to join the committee.
